(September 27) BETHESDA, MD -- Three Big Train alumni were drafted and signed professional contracts in 2001. Eleven more Big Train players were selected in Major League Baseball's June 2002 draft. A fifteenth Big Train alumnus signed as a free agent this summer. Here's how they did:

 

Bo Acors (Virginia Commonwealth, BT 1999), RHP, was signed as a free agent by the Mariners in June. Bo played for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (www.timberrattlers.com) in the Midwest League (Class A).

Pat Boran (Princeton, BT MVP 2000), a third baseman, was drafted by the Red Sox in the 24th round in 2002 and played for the Lowell (MA) Spinners (www.lowellspinners.com) in the New York-Penn League (Short-Season Class A). Pat's summer start was delayed because of a broken bone in his hand at the end of his college season.

Jim Cooney (Florida Atlantic, BT 1999 & 2000), LHP, drafted by the Orioles in the 45th round in 2002 and played for Cal Ripken's Aberdeen IronBirds (www.ironbirdsbaseball.com) in the New York-Penn League (Short-Season Class A). Jim led the team in ERA at 1.36

Gregg Davies (Towson, BT MVP 1999 & BT 2000), outfielder, drafted by the Orioles in 21st round in 2002 and played for Cal Ripken's Aberdeen IronBirds (www.ironbirdsbaseball.com) in the New York-Penn League (Short-Season Class A).

Jason Graham (Central Florida, BT 1999), an outfielder for the Big Train drafted by the Tigers as a pitcher in 14th round in 2002 and played for the Oneonta (NY) Tigers (www.milb.com) in the New York-Penn League (Short-Season Class A).

Note: Oneonta won the North Division but lost the championship series to Staten Island.

 

Torik Harrison (Southern, BT 1999), RHP, was drafted by the Marlins in the 33rd round in 2001 but an injury prevented him from playing for the Marlins organization.

In 2002, Torik signed with the Baton Rouge River Bats of the independent Southeastern Professional Baseball League (www.brriverbats.com).

Charlton Jimerson (Miami, BT 1999), an outfielder, led his Miami Hurricanes to a national championship and was named MVP of the 2001 College World Series. CJ's heroics and moving life story were the subject of a two page spread in Sports Illustrated.

Jimerson was drafted in the fifth round and signed with the Houston Astros. He played in the New York-Penn League in the summer of 2001 where he led the Pittsfield team in home runs (9), was second in steals (15), and third in RBIs (31). In 2002, CJ moved up to play for the Lexington (KY) Legends (www.lexingtonlegends.com) in the South Atlantic League (Class A). CJ led Lexington in home runs (14) and stolen bases (34).

Bobby Livingston (Trinity Christian HS, BT 2001), LHP, was drafted in the fourth round by the Mariners in 2001, but chose to pitch for the Big Train before signing.

In 2002, Bobby played for the Everett (WA) AquaSox (www.aquasox.com) where he was named Northwest League (Short Season Class A) Pitcher of the Week for July 15-21.

Note: The AquaSox won the League's Western Division but lost the championship to the Boise Hawks.

 

John Maine (UNC/Charlotte, BT 2000), RHP, drafted by the Orioles in 6th round in 2002 and played for Cal Ripken's Aberdeen IronBirds (www.ironbirdsbaseball.com) in the New York-Penn League (Short-Season Class A).

His pitching coach at Aberdeen, former Orioles All-Star Scott McGregor, told Baseball America: "He's just got an outstanding arm. It's a live, loose arm. He's got great velocity with movement on his fastball. He also has a very good slider and a sharp breaking ball... He's real calm on the mound. If all goes well, I think we'll be seeing him in the big leagues for a long time."

After just ten innings of work at Aberdeen, John was promoted to the Delmarva Shorebirds (www.theshorebirds.com) of the South Atlantic League (Class A).

Danny Matienzo (Miami, BT 2000), a catcher, was drafted by the Twins in the 23rd round in 2002 and played for the Elizabethton (TN) Twins (www.elizabethtontwins.com) in the Appalachian League (Rookie Advanced).

Justin Sims (Middle Tennessee State, BT 2000), an outfielder, was drafted by the Twins in 22nd round in 2002 and played for the Elizabethton (TN) Twins (www.elizabethtontwins.com) in the Appalachian League (Rookie Advanced).
