BASE BALL & AUCTION A BIG HIT |

Nearly
300 people attended the Fourth Annual Big Train Base Ball &
Auction on Sunday November 17, 2002 at the Pooks Hill Marriott.
Our Bethesda Community Base Ball Club raised in excess of $55,000
for our mission to improve the fields where our kids play ball.
Big
Train Outstanding Service Awards were presented to John Ourisman,
our Founder & Chairman; Christina Renshaw, our graphic artist from
Text Design Inc.; Joyce Semmes, our Host Family Chair; and Slapshot
of the Washington Capitals.
Montgomery
County Council President Steve Silverman presented John Ourisman
with a Proclamation expressing appreciation to John for his "vision,
hard work, commitment, and leadership in the building of Shirley
Povich Field and the Bethesda Community Base Ball Club." Bethesda
Community Base Ball Club President Bruce Adams displayed a plaque
and a bench that will be placed at the entrance to Povich Field
to recognize John Ourisman's extraordinary community leadership.
In addition, Adams announced that we have established the "John
Ourisman Big Train Volunteer Honor Roll." Starting at next year's
Big Train Base Ball & Auction and each year after, we will add to
the Ourisman Honor Roll the names of those volunteers who have devoted
significant volunteer time to Big Train baseball for a five year

BINDA & GUS HLEBOVY NAMED BIG TRAIN CO-MVPs |

MD -- "This was the year of the pitcher for the Big Train,"
Bethesda Big Train Manager Derek Hacopian said in announcing
Co-Most Valuable Player Awards for the 2002 Big Train season.
"Byron
Binda and Gus Hlebovy anchored an outstanding 2002 Big
Train pitching staff. Byron and Gus are very similar as pitchers.
They are not physically big, but both throw hard, have good sliders,
and have a bulldog mentality on the mound. Without a strong offense
this past year, we really needed to have pitchers like Binda and
Hlebovy keep us in games and give us a chance to win. They did just
that, helping the Big Train come out on top in many close games.
They are winners."
Binda,
from Stafford, VA, is a sophomore at Coastal Carolina University.
He led the Griffith League in earned run average (1.16) for the
second year in a row. Binda led the league in wins with a 6-0 record.
He struck out 52 batters in 54 innings of work. Hlebovy,
a junior at Kent State University from Campbell, Ohio, had an ERA
of 1.43 and a record of 6-2 with two saves. [More]

From
Rockville to Anacostia, Bethesda to Santo Domingo, the Bethesda
Community Base Ball Club is making a real difference in the lives
of children. We led a campaign to build a “Baby Povich Field”
in Cabin John Regional Park for youth players. We took a long
neglected field in Anacostia and turned it into a jewel for the
Fields of Dreams after-school program. We sent five enormous boxes
of sneakers and gloves to Manny Mota for the children of Campo
de Sueños in the Dominican Republic. And we continue to improve
youth fields from Bethesda to Wheaton, Rockville to Takoma Park

THE BIG TRAIN VOLUNTEER ALL-STAR TEAM! |

What's
your baseball dream? Ever dreamed of being an announcer? Exciting
the fans by being the mascot? Keeping score? Singing the National
Anthem before game? If so, think about becoming
a Big Train Volunteer. Volunteers are what make the game happen.
Volunteers perform roles such as ushering, ticket taking, announcing,
operating the scoreboard, playing the mascot Homer, providing
mascot security, selling souvenirs, announcing, official score-keeping,
National Anthem singing, and assisting with special events during
the game. Anyone
above age 11 may volunteer in some way. Students can earn
service learning credits by volunteering at the Big Train.

Bethesda
Community Base Ball Club is a volunteer-based organization dedicated
to theraising money to improve youth baseball and softball fields.
Your volunteer hours help us keep our costs down and allow us
to dedicate more money to improving fields.
